The Apollo moon missions had a Command Module (CM) as well as a Lunar Module (LM). The CM and LM in orbit would separate. One Apollo Astronaut would stay in the CM, which would orbit the Moon, the other two Apollo Astronauts would take the LM down to the lunar surface. While on the Moon surface the astronauts would explore the landscape, setting up experiments, taking pictures, collecting rock samples, etc., the astronauts would return to the CM for the journey back to Earth. (or did they?)
